Profile

Tabeeby is a doctor booking application from the Startup Agility, based in Kuwait City. The application is for both IOS and Android and supports English and Arabic languages. Agility did not want to invest too much money in research and development and asked for a more lean UX design. Yet that did not stop us from conducting research to build the product.

Challenges

The challenge came in designing an MVP that serves users’ needs in Kuwait but is not too robust that it gets confusing. The plan was to educate and then expand in function and design.

Another challenge we encountered was access to research from Kuwait. It was hard to access users’ research in a country so far away from Vancouver. While designing, we kept our biases in check and relied on our research only.

Project kick-off

We kicked off the project with a brainstorming session by asking What is it we are building? For whom are we making it? What problems are our users facing, and how can we help them overcome them? What are our biases, and how can we exclude them from our research?

We collected the stakeholders’ information regarding their target market and the features they wish to see implemented in their app. Agility has already done its end of the research and built its brand by working with a local branding agency in Kuwait. They handed us the brand guidelines, and we took it from there.

We compiled all the data and built our personas so we could target our efforts into making a valuable product.

Competitive analysis

When planning the application, we looked at the direct and indirect competition. For the Middle-Eastern and African markets, there were many outstanding applications. For the Arabian peninsula (AKA The Gulf Area), the app market was fierce with some excellent applications, so we listed the best, and we took one North American application as we felt we needed something different to be brought into the mix.

The goal of the analysis was to look at the following:

The users

When we started our research on Kuwait, we studied the culture and considered the demographics of Kuwait. We wanted to cover both men and women of Kuwaiti backgrounds, and one of the biggest demographics in Kuwait, which is the South Asian community.

Salman

  • Age: 35
  • Education: College Grad
  • Profession: Accountant in the public sector
  • Hometown: Kuwait City, Kuwait
  • Family: Married with four kids

"I love technology because everything is at my fingertips."

Goals

  • Finding doctors around me.
  • I want to know which clinic is around me and its services.
  • I want to read reviews of doctors.

Frustrations

  • Most clinics are not online, and most do not have websites.
  • Finding doctors that I feel comfortable with is not easy. I need a personal connection before a professional one.

Script

Salman is a professional accountant and a father of four. He likes technology and spends most of his time online. Technology plays a significant role in his life, and he feels more businesses should be accessible online.

Dana

  • Age: 29
  • Education: Master’s degree
  • Profession: Lawyer
  • Hometown: Al Jahra, Kuwait
  • Family: Married with two kids

“I love my job, and I love my family. I work long hours but always find time to take care of my family and drive them around to their football practice and doctor’s appointments.”

Goals

  • I want to find doctors around me, especially female doctors.
  • I want doctors who own private clinics rather than government ones.

Frustrations

  • Finding a female doctor is challenging, especially since I live in Al-Jahra.
  • Finding out which clinic offers what service is difficult, especially since most clinics do not have a website.

Script

Dana is a professional lawyer in Al-Jahra and a mother of a big family. She loves her career, family, and faith as she lives in Al-Jahra, a distant city with little access to medical services and private clinics. She is having problems finding the right clinic with the right doctors. As a Muslim, she feels more comfortable working with female doctors.

Rajindar

  • Age: 45
  • Education: College Grad
  • Profession: Engineer
  • Hometown: New Delhi, India
  • Family: Married with two kids

“I have moved to Kuwait to live and work.”

Goals

  • I want to find clinics around me.
  • I want to know which clinics offer services in English as I do not speak Arabic.
  • I want to work with private clinics.

Frustrations

  • Finding information in English is not easy. I do not know which clinic offers services in English. Calling clinics is time-consuming and painful.
  • Government clinics are very discriminatory towards people of South Asian backgrounds.

Script

Rajindar is a senior engineer from India who speaks Hindi and English. Rajindar moved to Kuwait to make money as salaries in Kuwait are higher than in India, and his family is back home in India while he works in Kuwait. He feels going to government clinics is discriminatory and would only work with private clinics.

Mapping out the application

We worked with the stakeholders to make the application simple but valuable, so we went with very few features, as it is a minimum viable product.

As a patient, I want to check the featured coupons, so I can get a discounted medical treatment.
As a patient, I want to find a doctor and make a booking, so I can get medical treatment.
As a patient, I want to check my schedule, so I can know when my doctor’s appointment is.
As a patient, I want to check my favorite doctors, so I can rebook them again.
As a patient, I want to check a clinic online, so I can see their doctors before booking a doctor visit.

Wireframes

As the app has a payment solution, we had to account for new designs for Kuwait's KNET, the local online payment system. KNET allows users to make payments without using a credit card. Credit cards are not very common in Kuwait for online payments. KNET is the most popular solution
